Southwest Texas Junior College STEM clubs completed a service project benefiting the Devils River State Natural Area Del Norte unit earlier this month.

According to park superintendent Beau Hester, the project totaled 59 volunteer hours which included seedbed preparation, trail clearing, and fencing work. First-time volunteers were able to gain some meaningful exposure to the Devils River SNA and the resources that it offers.

The project marks the beginning of a continued partnership between SWTJC and the Devils River State Natural Area Del Norte.

"Everyone did an amazing job in making the service project a success, especially the overnight group who completed additional volunteer hours on Saturday,” said STEM Outreach Coordinator and Texas State Park Ambassador Oscar Gaytan. “We look forward to our continued partnership with Devils River SNA and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to produce new state park ambassadors and expand our volunteer efforts to other nearby state parks.”

A group of engineering students will help design custom birdhouses that will be built during a future service project.

The Devils River SNA is biologically diverse and a popular birding destination due to the converging of the Chihuahuan, Edwards Plateau, and Tamaulipan geographic regions at its location. It is located 60 miles North of Del Rio.

Volunteers were able to cool off in one of the most pristine rivers in Texas and enjoy the scenic view while hiking and nature viewing.
