Uvalde, TX, – SWTJC student, Lauren Del Toro of Pearsall was awarded the first ever Service Learning Project Scholarship for her work with the children from the Powers and Kirchner Child Development Center in Uvalde.

Del Toro spent a part of her free time volunteering at the college daycare. Her duties included reading to the children and working with them on different art projects.

According to Del Toro, she learned some valuable lessons while volunteering at the college daycare.

“I learned that patience is the top priority when working with younger children,” said Del Toro.

College administration launched the second part of the Quality Enhancement Plan during the spring semester earlier this year, which focuses on the high impact practice of service learning.

According to the American Association of Community Colleges, service learning is combining community service with academic instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking and personal and civic responsibility.

The idea behind service learning is to combine community service with academic instruction while focusing on critical, reflective thinking and personal and civic responsibility.

The scholarship is designed to promote service learning by individually awarding SWTJC students with a scholarship that can be used to attend SWTJC.

The next scholarship will be awarded during the Spring 2018 semester.
