Grants are awarded based on financial need determined by the results of the FAFSA form. Grants are gift funds that do not require repayment. A student's financial aid award will include grant funds whenever guidelines and funding levels permit. Funding is limited in some programs so students must apply early to receive most federal and state grant funds. Priority for grants is given to students that meet the May 1st priority deadline.

Grant funds are initially awarded based on full-time status during the fall and spring semesters. If a students enrollment changes to three-quarter time and half-time status, grant funds will be reduced.

Note: Most grants are funded through state or federal programs and are subject to change at any time. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for confirmation of grant offerings at SWTJC.

Federal Pell Grants Program

Students may apply for this federal grant by completing and submitting a financial aid application. The applications can be obtained from the institution's financial aid office or from a high school counselor. Eligibility is based on financial need as determined by a "pre-established formula". For those eligible, minimum student awards will be $555. Maximum amounts are expected to be $5920 for the 2017-2018 award years.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

The SEOG program is another federal program that offers grant aid to eligible students. Eligibility and the amount of award are based on the results of the financial aid application. Program funds are subject to change and are based upon federal funding.

Texas Public Educational Grant (TPEG)

All applicants who file an application for financial aid at SWTJC are eligible for a grant if need is established. House Bill 43, adopted in May 1971, by the Texas Legislature created this program for eligible Texas residents. Funds for this program are provided from a portion of tuition and fees paid by SWTJC students. Eligibility is determined by the institution based on results of a financial aid application. Non-resident students are eligible to participate. Program funds are subject to change and are based upon state funding.

Texas Education Opportunity Grant (TEOG)

Texas residents who are not eligible for the Texas Grant Program may be eligible to receive a TEOG grant. Applicants must complete Fall application for Federal Student Aid. Student must be enrolled in at least half-time, in a certificate or associate degree program. The student must also show financial need and have a family contribution of $2000 or less, not be convicted of a felony or crime involving a controlled substance, and not have an associates or baccalaureate degree. The grant will assist with tuition and fees and awards. Program funds are subject to change and are based upon state funding.
