College adopts effective tax rate, see increase in fall enrollment

Uvalde, TX, – The SWTJC board of trustees met in regular session on Thursday (Sept. 21) in Uvalde, where they voted to adopt the effective tax rate of $0.1652 per $100 valuation. Last year’s tax rate was $0.16 per $100 valuation.

In other business, board members approved the unaudited financial statement as of Aug. 31, 2017.

Trustees nominated Blaine Bennett, Sergio Porras, and Tony Moreno as candidates to the Uvalde County Appraisal District’s board of directors during Thursday’s meeting.

In other matters, Hector Gonzales, college president reported on the status of fall enrollment. 

According to Gonzales, fall enrollment was up approximately one percent, while contact hours were up six percent and credit hours were up eight percent compared to last fall.

Board members heard numerous reports including, 4DX by outreach director Michele Torres and criminal justice instructor Dale Gear.

Other reports included a pathways report by the vice president of academic affairs, Mark Underwood and the president’s report by Gonzales.

Gonzales informed the board about meetings with Dana Williams, Operations Manager with H.E. Butt Family Foundation and Sul Ross State University President, Dr. Kibler. 

He also updated the trustees on college facilities, which included repairs to air conditioners, roofs, and the swimming pool in Uvalde.

Trustees were also informed about the concealed carry signage which was installed on all campuses to comply with state law.

President Gonzales also updated the board on the current process of securing the Uvalde campus with the installation of fences and gates to keep campus secure during nights and weekends.
